Ms Burnham's Gr. 3 and Ms. Lycan's Gr. 2 classes explore with iPods

Why I like this app:
Flip movie – You use a video or pictures then cut it out and make it into a movie.
Mrs. Martineau asked :  What is a flip movie?
A movie that flips when move your finger on the screen.  You can make it fast or slow.  I like it.  Mackenzie
Puppet pals and talking Tom are fun and creative.  Puppet pals is good for school and Talking Tom is more of a game. With puppet pals you learn how to create something that might come true one day, you learn to use your imagination. In puppet pals you make your own story and in Talking Tom you make him say words. Ryann

Jesica - GeoWalk

I like looking at pictures of things around the world. I liked the picture of Mount Rushmore National Memorial best.  I like that it shows a whole bunch of faces carved out of rock.  It is in South Dakota.  I looked it up in an atlas.  I learned that their carved out of rock to represent the four presidents of the United States.

Emily - I thought that reading skill #2 was a good learning app. I also think doodlecast and math bingo was awesome.
They are good because you are learning new things and new math questions.  Reading skill #2 hunt (shows a picture of someone hunting) you choose a level match the picture with the word.

Nyah - I like math bingo because you learn math questions.  In word bingo you learn words.  It was fun because you can play bingo.  I like basic math because you do math questions and it let you have choices.  It was fun.  I like reading skill #2.  If you try to sound out the words and if you can't do it you press the top and it gives you the sound.  I think kindergarten kids would like reading skill #1.

iPods in the classroom

Randerson students take part in the global event A~DAY

A Day
Gr. 5 student picture ~ A Day project May 15th

May 15th was a day to be a part of a global expression of “a day in the world.” This project was initiated by Swedish non-profit foundation Expressions of Humankind and photos selected for exhibition may be used in a book. Students were asked "What photo would you take to show a perspective of a day in the life of school in Nanaimo, BC?" Classes from Randerson Ridge took part in this global initiative aimed to connect people from around the world and appreciate and celebrate diversity.

Little Fingers ~ iPods with K-2's
At Randerson students used iPods to capture images. Each group (4 classes, 17 iPods/class) took many pictures to show perspective of what a day in our lives at Randerson looks like. They were asked to select their top pictures to be considered for this international event. Here's a glimpse at some of the pictures our students took. http://www.aday.org/profile/60503 (please note that to upload the pictures, I registered under my name but you will see under the pictures, the story behind the shot is given as well as credit to the student). I was not the photographer, simply the middle person :) Congratulations Randerson students. Your creativity, perspective and engagement in this project was excellent.

Guest blogger Jacob talks about Magyk

For the book club we read the book Magyk. There are seven books in the series.  The series is called Septimus Heap.  I highly recommend the book. It includes action, adventures, and best of all Magyk.  At the book club we talk about the book and who our favourite character was and we also got snacks! I would give it a ten out of ten. You should read the first chapter two times because it introduces a lot of characters at one time and read the books in order. I definitely recommend coming to a book club!

Magyk Book Club by guest blogger Connor

For the book club we read a book called Magyk. I really liked the idea about having the book club and would recomend having some more.  There were really good snacks at the meeting.  The book included a genre of action, adventure, humor and of course: Magyk! I thought it was a very good book since i'm already on the sixth book. the book was very interesting.  In my opinion Nicko was my favourite character because he likes sailing just like me!  There was a guy named DomDanial who was evil and tried to kill princess Jenna and she attacks him with the flying Dragon Boat!

Please welcome our guest blogger Gr.1 student Serena

The tree is our best friend that gives us fruit and fresh air.
I learned that trees mostly have one type of fruit but the picture on this tree has lots of fruit including watermelon because its just a fun picture.

I learned that trees give us shade and fruit.  I learned that carbon dioxide goes into the leaves and oxygen comes out of the leaves. We need trees to live or else there won't be air. I learned one tree has only enough air for four people. Trees can live for hundreds and hundreds of years. There is a tree in California that is more than 3,000 years old.
I did this project with my Dad.  I had fun doing this project. I like the silly boy picture and the heart shaped tree picture best.

Guest bloggers today are Gr. 2's

Our Gr. 2's reflect on releasing the salmon fry into the river

"Releasing the fry was awesome because I got to release two.  We dumped them out in a jar.  We put them in salmon habitat, a river.  The two invertebrates I caught was the best part of the trip."
Wyler

" I liked when we released the fish and we got to release four fry.  I learned that salmon can't survive in warm water."  Brendan

" When I released the salmon it felt awesome because we had them for so long.  It's just so exciting to see them go.  It was really, really fun learning about other things at the fish hatchery, like when something in the ocean dies the rest of the ocean dies too."                                       Trysta

" It was really sad for me too that the fish go because we had them in the classroom for so long and I'm going to miss them.  The fish tank with the fish in it was a nice sound in our classroom.  The classroom smelled really good when the fish were there.  It smelt a little bit like fish."           Emma

" It was fun letting the salmon go.  It was fun having them in the classroom.  Salmon have a life - cycle. I will miss the salmon.  The salmon was small.  It was a fry when we released them. "     Leah

"The fish was a great thing to see.  The fish kept on coming to the top of the tank when we were not there.  The fish swam alot.  The life-cycle is egg. alevin, fry, smolt, adult, spawner.  I had fun on the field trip."                                Gavin

"It was fun releasing them.  When we were gone they went up to the top and we were there they went to the bottom of the fish tank.  I will miss the fry."                                                  Cadence

"It was fun having the salmon.  I played a salmon play.  All of the people in our class did different salmon stations.  I liked when the salmon swam up and down in the fish tank.  I liked learning about the salmon life cycle."                         Kai

" I was sad when we released the fry because they were so cute.  I can't have fry sandwiches anymore.  I still think their cute and I won't eat them now.  We got to put them in little jars when we released them.  We dipped the jars into the river.  The water was a bit cold.  The fry swam away and hid from us.  They hid in the rocks or anything they could possibly hide in."                   Tal

Gr.5/6/7's choose their favourite apps ~ Gr. 2's talk about texture

Mr. McKinlay's Gr. 5/6 and Mr. Zimmer's grade 6/7 classes spent their last day with iPads exploring their favourite apps.  Their task was to find 3 apps that they felt were a) educational b) fun to use and c) had multiple features.
Students used Explain Everthing.

Mrs. Uhlmann's Gr. 2 class are studying different textures in art and science.  They are using scientific descpritive words like flexible, rough, smooth and hard to describe different textures.  To empahsize their understanding of texture and use of descriptive words, the Gr. 2's used Book Creator to take pictures of texture, write text and record their voice describing textures around our playground. Their voices were captured but I was unable to transfer them to this format.  I have written the student's recordings in the caption box below the pictures.

The tree is rough and bumpy.  The fence is smooth and scratchy.
